About Project

In May 2008, OMRAB concluded a contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the Abadan Refinery Water Treatment Plant, Cooling Water System, and Auxiliary facilities. The project was successfully completed within two years.

In a joint venture, OMRAB was retained by Abadan Oil Refining Co. (AROC) to execute this EPC project, which included a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day, a Cooling Water System with a capacity of 36,000 cubic meters per day, and a Fire Water System, all within the Abadan Refinery. The advanced conceptual design used in this project makes it one of the most remarkable in OMRAB’s history.

The Cooling Water System for the entire refinery is supplied by a direct-contact evaporative, mechanically induced draft, counter-flow cooling tower, which serves the main process units. The required makeup water is provided by the Water Treatment Unit to compensate for the evaporative losses from the Cooling Tower. The Cooling Water System consists of the following sections:
– Cooling tower
– Circulating pumps
– Distribution pipe network
– Side stream filter
– Steam turbine packages
– Chemical dosing package

The Water Treatment Unit supplies clarified and demineralized water for the Cooling Water System and other users within the refinery. Raw water sourced from the Bahmanshir River undergoes treatment to meet the required specifications. Key components of the Water Treatment Unit include:
– Pre-treatment system with self-cleaning filters, coagulation, flocculation, clarification, and chemical dosing skids
– Filtration system with Aquazur V sand filters
– Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) system, which includes ultra-filtration, chemical dosing, R.O. trains, flushing pumps, and a Clean-In-Place (CIP) system with a capacity of 1,450 cubic meters per day
– Demineralization system with mixed beds and regeneration facilities

Bioss-Treat, a patented technology from Evonik, Germany, was employed as a pretreatment method for nutrient removal. The R.O. system is designed to meet specific water quality standards under various temperatures and raw water Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) ranging from 200 to 10,000 mg/L, with 12 distinct scenarios defined for operation.

One of the challenges of this project was its location in an alluvial area. OMRAB overcame this by implementing an advanced soil improvement design without the need for piling.

Most of the hydro-electromechanical equipment was sourced from renowned suppliers in the USA and Western Europe, including Sadid Jahan Sanat, Omrab (Iran), Hyosung Ebara (Korea), Shinko (Japan), SPIG (Italy), lnge, Evonik (Germany), DVC Int. (Denmark), E&H, and INDUMART (Canada).
